For PN licensure:
- Regulation 16.12.2.10 (A) Prerequisites for licensure of registered nurses and license practical nurses by examination in New Mexico. (1) Completion of and eligible for graduation from a board approved course of study for the preparation of registered nurses or practical nurses
For RN licensure:
- Successful completion of a Board approved program. If the state does not approve pre-licensure nursing programs, national programmatic accreditation (i.e. ACEN, CCNE, CNEA) is required.
For APRN (CNP, CRNA, CNS) licensure:
Nurse Practitioner:
- Successful completion of a graduate level nursing program designed for the education and preparation of nurse practitioners as providers of primary, or acute, or chronic, or long-term or end of life health care. The program must be offered through an accredited institution of higher education or through the armed services.
- A minimum of 400 hours of clinical experience is needed to receive prescriptive authority.
Registered Nurse Anesthetist:
- Successful completion of a graduate level program designed for the education and preparation of certified registered nurse anesthetists. The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs must accredit the program.
- A minimum of 400 hours of clinical experience is needed to receive prescriptive authority.
Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Successful completion of a clinical nurse specialist program at the master’s or doctoral level in a defined clinical nursing specialty through an accredited institution of higher education.
- A minimum of 400 hours of clinical experience is needed to receive prescriptive authority.
Nurse Midwife:
- The New Mexico Board of Nursing does not license or regulate certified nurse midwives. Please refer to the NM Department of Health for more information.
