NCSBN’s Transition to Practice regu- latory model has been designed to be robust, meaning that it will include all health care settings that hire newly licensed nurses and all educational levels of nurses, including practical nurse, asso- ciate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, and other entry-level graduates. It has also been designed to be flexible so that many of the current standardized transi- tion programs will meet the require- ments of this model. The new graduate must first take and pass ...

So in this instance, I would just really bring your attention to where this is all just kind of preliminary, I coded essentially a warning level of zero so essentially, you have thrown no warning flags based on your underlying data. There's no issue with your enrollment, there's no issue with your NCLEX scores, there's no issue with accreditation, etc. That would qualify as essentially a low warning category. If you throw two flags, so ©2020 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. We also ask about faculty credentials as our studies found better outcomes when faculty in RN programs hold graduate degrees and in PN programs BSN degrees. The faculty ratio in clinical and didactic courses does not have a lot of evidence but this is a question that comes up a lot to boards of nursing, so we need more data. Interestingly, Odom-Maryon in 2018, found higher NCLEX pass rates linked to higher student-faculty didactic ratios, which is a bit counterintuitive so we'll see what we find. Our qualitative and Delphi studies and literature support orientation of adjunct faculty, as oftentimes they are clinicians who have no idea of the curriculum or even what the students are learning in their companion clinical course.

Reflecting on this history, BCCN&M Registrar and CEO Cynthia Johansen, MAL, MSc, says, “The Canadians were contributing but we didn’t have a vote in the Delegate Assembly. As the relationship between the Canadian regulators matured with NCSBN, there was a recognition that those of us who were using NCLEX-RN® were also having a degree of influence in decision-making in the exam’s development. We were sending people to participate in item writing and working collectively and collaboratively to translate the exam.” Johansen stresses that no lobbying occurred, and discussions occurred organically and collaboratively.

I want to just emphasize a little bit, committee selections. I think this also speaks to member engagement, how pleased we were this year. We saw a groundswell of interest in people serving on committees. And we do have standing committees, of course, NCLEX, Finance, the Leadership Succession Committee. But just to highlight briefly a couple of the important ones coming up, you're going to hear about the Model Act and Rules Committee. And we had a lot of volunteers for that committee, and we're fortunate enough to move forward with an approach that will allow a lot of people to be involved.

Likewise, the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Future of Nursing report (IOM, 2011) made a recommendation (key message number two) that “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression” (p. 163). More specifically, it recommends that by 2020 the proportion of baccalaureate degree nurses should be 80 percent (IOM, 2011), although in 2013 the percentage of first-time, U.S. educated baccalaureate graduates t ...
