It became clear that nurses needed resources to help them understand how to properly use social media without breaking privacy and confidentiality laws. NCSBN published a white paper that provided guidelines for social media use, in addition to producing a free educational video and brochure. To date, more than 500,000 brochures have been distributed, the video has been viewed nearly 50,000 times and the brochure has been downloaded from the NCsBN social media website more than 5,000 times.

ProfessionalBoundaries_Complete.pdf
Nurses should be knowledgeable regarding professional boundaries and work to establish and maintain those boundaries. Nurses should examine any boundary-crossing behavior and seek assistance and counsel from their colleagues and supervisors when crossings occur. New Nurses: Key Issues | NCSBN
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. It gives them, as well as practicing nurses and students, an explanation of how the profession is regulated, through nursing licensure, U.S. Nursing Regulatory Bodies and state laws called nurse practice acts. Key Issues in Nursing These videos cover key issues in nursing: safe social media use, maintaining professional boundaries, and addressing substance use disorder. Each offers practical guidance to support ethical and effective nursing practice. Social Media Guidelines for Nurses Social media use is ubiquitous, but inappropriate posts by nurses have resulted in licensure and legal repercussions.
