Recommendations for the 2019 NCLEX-RN test plan are based on the 2017 RN practice analysis as well as expert judgment and we also got feedback from member boards and regulatory bodies. As mentioned earlier, the NEC approves of the test plan category weights. The NEC decision is based on two main current percentages for the eight NCLEX...sorry.

All rights reserved. 4 - Absolutely. That's a timely question, Nicole. The 2026 NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN test plans were approved at the NCSBN annual meeting in August of 2025. They will go into effect on April 1st of '26, and until then, the current test plans will remain in place. However, the test plan will be, the new test plan, excuse me, will be available on our website in December of 2025.

I think this may be a scoop for an NCLEX Conference audience. This is brand new information that we may be sharing here, in fact, for the first time publicly. The PN test plan is scheduled to go live April 2023, and that follows the standard triannual cycle. Due to COVID disruptions, the RN test plan, which would normally be scheduled to go live April 1st, 2022, will, in fact, be delayed one year and go live April 1st, 2023.

And then the items are then vetted through in a review panel that also, again, looks by nurse clinicians for the content to be accurate and appropriate for entry-level. So nothing has changed from that standpoint, but we do many different steps to ensure that these items are appropriate and that we are testing appropriate content across all of the test plan throughout the NCLEX exam. - Thank you, Emily. And I'm going to keep it with you. Do you know when the test plan, the next test plan that reflects NGN would be published? And let's take that for both RN and PN. - Yes. So I believe that there is a new test plan that comes out in April 2023, but there's no separate test plan for NGN.

Absolutely. - The scenario is let's assume that a graduate takes the NCLEX in December or January, and that would be under the current test plan, but they fail the exam and they need to retake and potentially they schedule for April or May 2023. In that case, would they be retaking essentially the current NCLEX or would their retake be next generation and mapping to the new 2023 test plan?

For the Next Generation NCLEX CAT Exam, we use test plans as the blueprint of all exams. The test plan provides the summary of the nursing content and the scope of the licensure examination. No matter how many items you have in your exams, your exam meets the specified percentages of the test plan.

What's on the slide is the RN test plan. Now we know that test difficulty and the test length can be customized to candidate's ability. You may wonder how we can assure the content coverage is the same for all NCLEX exams. We program the computer to do two things. Firstly, before selecting the next question, the computer will determine the percentage of items you currently have in eight content areas and then find out which content area deviates the most from the test plan.
