[LPN/VN, Year 3] Almost all Lpn/Vns described planning to go back to school and many did . this trend may reflect their response to status inequality in their practice roles and/or a prevalent message that pursuit of an Rn license was an expectation . The significant overrepresentation of persons of color at the lowest level of nursing practice and compensation may be indicative of systemic challenges associated with persons of color having access to RN education and practice opportunities. In the 2020 survey, the proportion of RNs holding a baccalaureate degree increased for those reporting their highest level of nursing education, but remain steady for those reporting the degree held when obtaining their first nursing license.

This study used a mixed-mode approach, involving mailing a national, randomized sample survey to licensed RNs and LPNs/VNs in most jurisdictions, supplemented by a national, randomized sample survey emailed to licensed RNs and LPNs/VNs in four jurisdictions and data from the e-Notify nurse licensure notification system for five jurisdictions. A survey was mailed to a randomized sample of licensed RNs and LPNs/LVNs in 24 jurisdictions, supplemented by an email-based survey to a randomized sample of licensed RNs and LPNs/LVNs in 18 jurisdictions, and data from Nursys e-Notify for 10 jurisdictions. Data from RN and LPN/LVN respondents were collected between March 25, 2024, and December 31, 2024. A total of 744,714 RNs and 137,902 LPN/VNs participated in the study. A formal nonresponse bias analysis was conducted after the survey closed, and weighting was applied prior to the final analysis of the responses.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. The ongoing assessment of the NCLEX-RN & NCLEX-PN includes research that gathers job analysis data from entry-level nurses and aides that ultimately contributes to refinement and adaptation of the tests to keep pace with the rapidly evolving health care environment. Beyond ongoing analysis and measurement of entry-level competence, NCSBN is an active partner with its members in exploring issues related to health care, government policy, nursing practice and regulatory processes and initiatives, both nationally and internationally.
