REx-PN Examination Candidate Bulletin

Effective January 2026, all items will be scored dichotomously (i.e., correct or incorrect) except for multiple response, select all that apply items. These items will be scored polytomously for partial credit. The REx-PN is designed to test knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry level. The REx-PN is a variable- length, computerized, adaptive test. The REx-PN is not offered in paper-and-pencil or oral examination formats. The REx-PN can be anywhere from 90 to 150 items. Regardless of the number of items administered, the time limit for this examination is four hours.

After consideration of all available information, the NCSBN Board of Directors (BOD) determined the current passing standard was sufficient as a measure of safe and effective entry-level registered nurse (RN) practice. The BOD used multiple sources of information to guide its evaluation and discussion of the passing standard. As part of this process, NCSBN convened an expert panel of 11 nurses to perform a criterion-referenced standard-setting procedure.

For the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2010, 281,637 candidates took the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN Examinations. PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Publications NCSBN produces a wide variety of publications focused on the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN Examinations, as well as health care issues and activities, in addition to conducting its own research studies by addressing some of today’s most important nursing practice issues.

Review and Discuss Alternative Language NCLEX® Examination (Executive Session) The Board entered into Executive Session to discuss the report regarding and Alternate Language NCLEX examination. The Board directed that a discussion of the relevant issues be presented to the members at the 2006 Midyear Meeting. I.2. Discuss Nurse Aide Practice Analysis Anne Wendt, Director, NCLEX Examinations, presented the findings of the 2005 Nurse Aide Practice Analysis to the Board: The results were similar to the 2002 Nurse Aide Practice Analysis report. The 2005 results will be published in form of an NCSBN Research Brief and a review of the current Nurse Aide Test plan will be conducted.

The first, Patient Safety Culture and Barriers to Adverse Event Reporting, investigates current facility protocols and practices for reporting nurse involvement in serious adverse events to Boards of Nursing (BONs). The second, The Economic Burden and Practice Restrictions Associated with Collaborative Practice Agreements, examines how specific aspects of scope of practice regulations place undue financial burden and practice restrictions on advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Emilie: I assisted in the initial analysis of the 2017 National Nursing Workforce Survey, with the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers.
