And, from a licensure exam perspective, is decision making and critical thinking measurable? That is what NCSBN is trying to find out. To determine whether the test is actually assessing what needs to be measured, NCSBN commissioned a literature review of 200 peer-reviewed articles detailing what is occurring in nursing practice, education and testing. Age distribution really tells the story of the 2024 National Nursing Workforce results. So after a dip in 2022, so you can see that is the dark blue line. So that's the only one that deviates from that nice high peak towards the higher end of the age range. After a dip in 2022, the median age of the RN workforce has returned to pre pandemic levels. The primary driver of that that we've been able to confirm in the analysis is a rebound among more experienced RNs in the ensuing two years. So between 2022 and 2024, we have seen a rebound among more experienced RNs.

In 2015, a practice analysis was completed that surveyed approximately 1,500 NPs from across Canada, from primary healthcare, adult, and pediatric specialties. Findings concluded that patients differ in needs, context, age development, condition, and complexity. Yet no matter the stream of NP practice, practice setting, or patient population, NPs were found to be using the same competencies.
