In 2019, my team and I published the first study examining opioid prescribing patterns of patients that were managed by MDs and NPs using Medicare data. We conducted the analysis only in the 14 states that had adopted full practice authority for NPs, including no physician oversight requirements for the prescribing of controlled substances. ©2021 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. NCSBN Launches Next Generation NCLEX Exam | NCSBN
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. Entry-level nurses are required to make increasingly complex decisions while delivering patient care. These decisions often require the use of clinical judgment to care for patients safely and effectively. Philip Dickison, PhD, RN, chief operating officer, NCSBN, notes, “Because clinical judgment underlies almost all of a nurse’s activities, it is of paramount importance to NCSBN. We need to be able to measure it effectively to safeguard public protection. We need to help ensure that when a regulatory body licenses a nurse to practice, they are safe to care for you and your loved ones.”

There are nine exam user members and 21 associate members that are either NRBs or empowered regulatory authorities from other countries or territories. NCSBN is dedicated to developing a psychometrically sound and legally defensible nurse licensure examination consistent with current nursing practice. The NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN®, the world’s premier licensure exams, are constantly and rigorously evaluated to keep pace with the rapidly evolving health care environment. Based on analysis and research that informed NCSBN that an increasing level of knowledge and skills are necessary to meet the demands of an ever evolving and more complex health care system.

What we saw was that the evidence indicates that nursing diagnoses do not contribute to the overall care of patients, but what we're looking at is the push by all qualified health care providers as part of that. And so, the focus changing to the patient. The Assessment within the RN and LPN Scope of Practice. We looked at and spoke with LPN experts as I was mentioning earlier, the discussion on this topic. Also looked at the definitions of focused and comprehensive assessments, both involving collection, analysis and synthesis of data.

But there really isn't a lot of data that support it for quality outcomes. But certainly, you have to pass the licensure exam https://www.ncsbn.org/13300.htm ©2019 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 2 in order to practice. So, it will certainly be a part of the approval process. Practice readiness has come up or competence has come up in the literature. And this is related to the practice of the new nurse. So, you can see the definition that comes out of the literature is able to deliver consistent, competent, and safe care in predictable situations, with guidance with more complex situation.
