The Institute of Medicine (Greiner and Knebel, 2003) has called for an “overhaul” of health care education, stating that health professionals aren’t adequately prepared to address the ever-changing demands of health care. Similarly, the Carnegie study of nursing education has found that nursing education classroom teaching suffers from a lack of adequate teaching in the areas of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities (Dr. Patricia Benner, personal communication, April, 2008). In this complex health care environment where medical errors are a major concern (Kohn, Corrigan and Donaldson, 1999), neither the boards of nursing, whose mission is public protection, nor educators thought the answer was to lower standards.

But also it's going to show if you have any discipline, because if you were disciplined at any time, that's public information, and it will be included there. Within your record, when you pull up your record in nursys.com under the Quick Confirm tab, you'll see that you also have what's called a Unique Nurse Identifier, which is a number that is unique to you in the same way that your social security number is unique to you. Now, this is a relatively newer thing in that it's existed for several years, but in the future, I think that you will see your unique nurse number attached to many different things throughout your career. And I think that that, of course, has yet to roll out, but I believe we'll see it implemented in many different places.

I can get you in touch with someone if you're having some difficulty communicating, but unfortunately, I cannot answer any questions about Kiteworks, don't know anything about it, haven't seen it. That's all on the FBI. The Discipline Hive Network has got a ton of resources that I think would be very beneficial to you. The marketing team created a Media Response Toolkit. It's got, I don't know, the document is probably four or five pages long that goes through a number of questions that you would probably be asked, or that you might could anticipate regarding the Operation Nightingale investigation, and it gives you ways to message those.

Formatted_NCSBN_ClinicalDecisionMaking_0814 1 Abstract—Clinical judgment and decision-making is a required component of professional nursing. Expert nurses are known for their efficient and intuitive decision-making processes, while novice nurses are known for more effortful and deliberate decision-making processes. Despite taking longer to make decisions, novices still have trouble with effective decision-making. The aim of this paper is to review the factors that contribute to clinical judgment and decision-making of novice nurses.

The new edition of the online manual will be released as two separate volumes: one as a guide for foreign-educated nurses seeking licensure in the U.S. and the other as a resource for the boards of nursing (BONs). The manual will address such topics as identifying fraudulent documents, evaluating credential evaluation agencies, establishing standards for English proficiency, and under- standing immigration issues, including visas and Social Security numbers. In determining the content of the manual, NCSBN reached out to BONs for their input; additionally, a task force comprised of BON staff from several states convened to help attune the manual’s content to the needs of NCSBN Member Boards.

The preceptors in this model will be trained and the essentials of that module are being established. Preceptors will either work one-on-one with newly licensed nurses or in teams; recent evidence supports that team preceptorships can be very effective (Beecroft, Hernandez & Reid, 2008). NCSBN is planning to offer electronic social networking to connect new nurses to preceptors in those settings or regions of the country where preceptors are in short supply; again so that all novice nur ...
