All rights reserved. 3 new item types as discussed earlier. Candidates will continue to have up to five hours to complete the exam. And the exam will continue to be administered as a variable length CAT, but will be extended to score polytomous items. As was discussed earlier, the NGN will allow for items for partial understanding, rather than solely as all right or all wrong. The model chosen will allow for the continued use of the NCLEX scale. So, scores will be comparable pre and post-NGN. The specific model that we'll be using will be the partial credit model.

This article will provide some tips on designing item types similar to the new NGN items so that students will be ready. Central to the development of NGN- style questions is the recognition that traditional multiple-choice items may not effectively capture the nuanced abilities required of today’s nurses. Now it is time for more audiences to learn how this will all potentially be deployed in the future. NCSBN has employed a number of ways to inform nurse educators, nurses, nursing students, health care administrators and employers, and the general public about the NGN project. These varied methods include: published research, NGN Talks, the Next Generation NCLEX News and presentations about NGN at various conferences among others. It is imperative that we reach the widest possible audi- ences to inform and educate them about NGN and what it means for the future of nursing.

I got many comments about how our nursing program at the College of Southern Maryland taught and prepared them well. Many said there were no surprises going in. Is there anything you’d like to share about your program’s experiences with the NGN thus far? Any advice you’d give nursing faculty about preparing students for the NGN? Schmidt: It’s not a time for panic. If the faculty are stressed about the NGN approach, the students are going to notice it. It’s best we recognize that, yes, it’s a different way of assessing performance, but we need to think about what we’ve been doing all along that’s been successful, and not get so stressed out over things like this.
