The survey return due date was March 19, 2010. Phase two of the project will involve a randomized, con- trolled, multi-site, longitudinal study of three levels of simula- tion use in lieu of clinical hours. Students will be randomly assigned to a group where 25 percent of the time normally spent at clinical sites would be spent in simulation, a group where 50 percent of the time normally spent at clinical sites would be spent in simulation or a group where 100 percent of their time is spent at a clinical site.

Those case studies will include six items apiece. So, quick math would tell you they're going to get about 18 of these items in the first 70. The remaining items will be very simply what the NCLEX items are today. They'll be interspersed in all of that. Those people going to a maximum length exam or are passing the minimum length will have about 10% of the remaining exams being what we call standalone clinical judgment items.

And so this model is used and helpful for the nurse educator to write those clinical scenarios that you see and the items that are attached that follow that clinical judgment measurement model from whether it be a case from, you know, one recognized cues all the way to evaluate outcomes within that six items, or if they're writing those individual standalone items, such as the trends that look at measuring clinical judgment by looking over trends of time and information that happens over time, as well as those bow tie items that feature all of the steps of the clinical judgment measurement model within one item.

These increasingly complex decisions often require the use of clinical judgment to support patient safety. NCSBN has conducted several years of research and study to understand and isolate the individual factors that contribute to the process of nursing clinical judgment. When the concept of clinical judgment is explored relative to nursing, it is expected the individual contributing factors to clinical judgment will closely align with the performance of activities involved in the delivery of nursing care.

And with the reference range, that is allowing the candidate to sort of see...like in real life, you would get a reference range for some sort of test result that came back. And it's not to test the candidate's knowledge on what is within normal and outside of that normal kind of reference range, it's what the candidate knows what to do and make a clinical judgment or use critical thinking.
