    The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. Patients can expect a nurse to act in their best interests and to respect their dignity. This means that a nurse abstains from obtaining personal gain at the patient’s expense and refrains from inappropriate involvement with a patient or the patient’s family members. Crossing professional boundaries or improper use of social media are violations of the nurse practice act and can be the cause of professional discipline and termination of employment.

The March 2015 Issue of the Journal of Nursing Education  featured an editorial by the study's lead investigator, Nancy Spector, PhD, RN, FAAN, discussing the implications of the study for educators.
